Mise-en-scene
Location:
Horror movies are usually set in fearful places. Most events
in horror movies happen in the night. There are loads of different places a
horror movie can we set, for example, isolated places, small communities,
parks, forests, haunted houses etc. In teen horror the settings would include
places that teenagers would hang out every day or most days.
The reason we never used a dark setting was because we
didn’t have the right equipment to show the scenes properly as the quality of
the movie wouldn’t come out correctly due to less lighting in the park and tree
walkways. It still counts as an opening sequence as not all horror movies have
to be set in dark places.
We chose our setting to be a park; this was because
teenagers love to hang out with their friends at the park. We also used a tree
walk way, this is a place that can be walked through but it’s also surrounded
with loads of trees.
Characters:
In teen horror movies usually there is at least one girl in
the film. There is also an antagonist who is the bad guy/girl and the
protagonist who is the good guy/girl. In teen horror movies there’s usually a
group of friends and the main characters are shown in the movie often.
We used two guys as protagonists and one girl as the
protagonist because we thought that many people fitted well in an opening
sequence. There was one antagonist who was going after only one person.
Before we chose our characters we interviewed them to see if
they fitted the role for each character and if they would be good at acting.
The three protagonists we chose were good for the role because they had past
experience in films.
Props:
There is a range of props that can be used in horror films,
such as, masks, knives, saws, blood, axe, blades etc. These are used to signify
horror movies. These connotate fear, violence, murder, terror, danger etc.
